Autumn 1
As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatu -llāhi wa-barakātuh.
In shaa Allah you have had a restful SUMMER break and looking forward to RETURNING for THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR!
We hope you are ready for the new term with lots of learning, fun and new experiences!
What we are learning this Term:
English
This term, Year 2 will be reading ‘How to Find Gold’ by Viviane Schwarz. This quirky, humorous and adventurous picture book is a 2016 award winning children’s book that celebrates a rip-roaring tale of bravery, determination and believing in yourself. In our English lessons, we will be participating in a range of practical activities as well as writing in role, instruction texts, setting and character descriptions, letter writing and poetry.
Phonics
This term, children will begin working on Phase 5 and learning about the rules of Spelling using a range of suffixes and learning new common exception words in Year 2.
Maths
This term, children will be exploring 2-digit numbers to 100, multiplication and division with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, measurements, temperature and picture graphs.
Science
In Science, we will be looking at ‘Uses of Materials’. Year 2 will name, identify and hunt for everyday materials including wood, metal, plastic, glass, rubber, brick, rock, paper, fabric and card. They will list properties of different materials such as hardness, strength, flexibility and shininess. Children will learn that the properties of materials are important to the object they are made from. They will identify suitable and unsuitable materials for different objects and will be able to explain why. Working Scientifically, children will learn what absorbency means and explore the absorbency of different types of materials and later apply the findings from these investigations to design theur very own nappy.
History
In History, we will be looking at the Great Fire of London. Children will investigate the following questions: Who was responsible for the Great Fire of London? How did the Great Fire of London occur? What was the result of the fire (both positive and negative)? What came out of the fire?
DT
In DT, we will be looking at creating our own puppets in Textiles. Children will explore different types of puppets, its features and apply various stitching skills to design and create individual finger puppets.
Computing
In computing, we will be learning about online safey, emails and digital footprints. We will also explore the use of Google Docs and Google Sheets.
Islamic Studies and Arabic
Year 2 will be taught Islamic Studies and Arabic by Ustadh Kasujja twice a week. The children will learn about the importance of different Islamic values, how best to apply these in everyday life, Muslim identity in addition to learning and practising new Surahs.
PE
PE is on Wednesday (PE Coach) and Thursday (Class Teacher). The children will be focusing on Multi-Skills/Moving in different ways. Please ensure that your child remembers their correct PE kit.
HOMEWORK
Homework will be set every Friday and collected on Tuesday. Homework will consist of Maths, English and Spellings. Children will also be expected to complete homework on platforms such as Google Classroom, IXL, Purple Mash and Bug Club. Your child will be sent home with a reading book every week. Please encourage children to read the book more than once to help familiariase themeselves with the vocabulary used and secure their phonetical knowledge, reading and comprehension.
