I hope you have all had a wonderful half term and are ready for all the fun things we have in store for you in Spring 2!
What we are learning this Year/Term
Our class book this half term will be Fantastic Mr Fox. It is a Roald Dahl classic that children will enjoy interacting with. From this book we will take part in role play, create character descriptions and wanted posters. Children will look at the features of direct speech and using speech marks – then convert a dialogue into a play script. At the end of the half term Year 3 will be rewriting the story with their own fantastic characters.
Children will learn to tell the time on digital and analogue clocks, calculate time in minutes, second and hours and look at dates. They will also be solving word problems around time. Children will learn how to read and understand bar and picture graphs. They will be carrying out their own investigation and drawing bar graphs of their own. We will end the unit focusing on angles. Children will learn to identify right angles, obtuse and acute angles.
This term we shall look at Movement and feeding. Children will be exploring what makes a healthy diet and investigating the diet of animals.
Children will be coding using scratch software this half term. We will build on our coding skills and explore block-based programming further.
P.E. will be still be every Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. Kit and suitable footwear. Replacing our Thursday P.E. session children will start Swimming on a Wednesday afternoon.
Swimming will take place on a Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure children wear their p.e. kit on that day. Please make sure that clothes are labelled to avoid children mixing anything up. The session is 2.30-3pm and children will return to school as quickly as possible. However it will be a late dismissal for Year 3 on this day. Here is a reminder of what is needed for each session:
- A bag suitable for transporting wet kit.
- A towel
- A swimming cap (compulsory for all)
- Goggles (optional but highly reccomended)
- Boys: Swimming trunks (no long/baggy shorts)
- Girls:Swimming costume or/and leggings//t-shirt made from sports material. (No baggy/cotton t-shirts)
- A rain jacket
- There will not be time for children to have a snack but they can bring one to have during dismissal.
This half term we will focus on ‘Safety around substances’. We will be looking at what makes a good friend and focus on the value of loving for your brother or sister what you love for yourself.
We will be exploring the world of mechanical engineering this half term and will focus on designing and making a vehicle with trebuchet. Year 3 will take part in two interactive workshops to support this unit.
Our History topic this term will be Ancient Egypt. We will explore what life was like in Ancient Egypt and compare it to life in Egypt today. We will be exploring real artefacts, learning about Pharaohs and pyramids. We will be visiting the imax cinema to watch ‘mysteries of Ancient Egypt’ in relation to this topic.
Our next book is Charlotte’s web which is an interesting text we will read this engaging text and take part in book talk and other activities. This text will also link to our comprehension skills.
Our Islamic Value this half term will be honesty. We will be talking about being truthful no matter what and that Allah loves the truthful ones.

On Monday 18th November 2019 Year 3 visited Clapham Common Woodland. Children had a great time exploring the woodlands. In groups children had a go at creating their own trees using natural materials. Check out their amazing work....On Monday 18th November 2019 Year 3...
How You Can Help
- Please listen to and read with your child as often as possible.
- Please help children to learn their spellings each week. Spelling tests will be on a Monday.
- In Year 3 we will move quite quickly through the times tables so please support your child throughout the year to learn, memorise the 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 8s, 10s times tables.
- Please ensure your child brings in their homework and reading record weekly.
- Mental Math’s/timetables
Homework will consolidate work taught in class over the week. Can you please make sure that you are signing the reading diaries. Library visit and changing books will be on a Wednesday.
