Assalamu’Alaikum Year 3
Welcome to Spring 2!
I hope you have enjoyed your half term and are ready to do some amazing learning in the new year. I hope you are excited to be back and InSha’Allah we are ready to carry on being superb hard workers. Please do not hesitate to contact me or speak to me if you have any questions.
What we are learning this Year/Term
In English we will be reading ‘The king who banned the dark’ by Emily Hayworth-Booth. During our lessons this term we are using a range of writing methods to develop and extend our understanding of the story. We will be writing letters of advice, a journalistic article, persuasive speeches and many more exciting lessons.
In Year 3 we will be reading ‘Varjak Paw’ by SF Said. Through learning new vocabulary, making predictions about the story, retrieving information and summarising what they have read, we will be developing their understanding of the text being read.
It is important that your child also reads at home every day. Please ensure your child reads at least 15 minutes every day and listen to them read. We encourage children to read a wide range of books. Please let me know if your child does not have access to suitable reading material. Children are also able to join local libraries which are free.
We will be looking at and developing children’s understanding of money, time and graphs. We will be using a variety of methods to help consolidate children’s learning and also use concrete materials to help with visualising the methods. Please ensure children continue practising their times tables at home to help consolidate their learning. They can use the timetables website which they have all been given logins to.
In computing children will be looking at coding with Scratch junior and develop their skills through exploring the different features of coding.
In Science, Year 3 will be looking at Magnets and forces. In this unit children will work towards answering the Quest question, ‘can you make a tool that can move something on the floor far away from you?’ They will be asked to think about a tool that can pick up things made of a magnetic material and consider the use of a telescopic arm or a folding arm to enable them to reach an object far away. The lessons leading up to answering the Quest will enable children to explore the properties of magnets and magnetic materials.
Year 3 will be studying History for the Spring term. We will be learning about Ancient Egypt. We will be looking at why the River Nile was important for the survival of Ancient Egypt, why they lasted for 3000 years and how it had an impact on our lives today while looking at key Pharaohs and figures in the time period.
P.E. will be on Tuesdays. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit and suitable footwear.
In DT this term, Year 3 will be exploring mechanisms and building on their knowledge from the previous year. We will be looking to make a moving vehicle that uses mechanisms such as levers to move objects around.
If there is something on our class page that you would like to see feel free to let me know.
