Assalamu’Alaikum Year 3
Welcome to Autumn 1 of the new school year!
I hope you are excited to be back at school after having a restful summer holiday. I hope being back in school will be enjoyable for you and InSha’Allah we are ready to be fantastic hard workers.
What we are learning this Year/Term
English
In English we will be reading ‘The Tin Forest’ by Helen ward. During our lessons this term we are using a range of writing methods to develop and extend our understanding of the story. We will be writing poems, planning and writing letters and many other exciting lessons.
Guided Reading
In Year 3 we will be reading ‘Krindlekrax’ by David Spindle. Through learning new vocabulary, making predictions about the story, retrieving information and summarising what they have read, we will be developing their understanding of the text being read.
It is important that your child also reads at home every day. Please ensure your child reads at least 15 minutes every day and listen to them read. We encourage children to read a wide range of books. Please let me know if your child does not have access to suitable reading material. Children are also able to join local libraries which are free.
Maths
We will be looking at and developing children’s understanding of place value and addition and subtraction. We will be using a variety of methods to help consolidate children’s learning and also using concrete materials to help with visualising the methods. Please ensure children are practising their times tables at home.
Computing
In computing children will be looking at online safety and how to be safe when using computers and they will also be developing their typing skills through using google docs.
Science
In Science, Year 3 will be looking at movement and feeding. In this unit children will learn that animals including humans need the right types and amounts of nutrition to thrive and grow, and that eating the wrong types and amounts can lead to health problems. They will identify that we cannot make our own food and that we need to eat a varied diet including meat and fish, beans and lentils, fats, starchy foods, fruit and vegetables. They will construct a balanced food plate and describe what happens if we don’t eat a balanced diet. Children will identify that animals have different dietary requirements and some foods that humans eat may be poisonous to animals. They will also explain the role of the muscles and skeleton and describe what would happen if we didn’t have a skeleton.
Topic
Year 3 will be studying History this term. We will be learning about The Stone Age to the Iron Age. We will be exploring the different time periods within this era and be making comparisons on the development of farming, housing and many other aspects. The children will be seeing lots of examples of tools and artefacts to aid their learning and understanding of the time period.
PE
P.E. will be on Tuesdays. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit and suitable footwear.
Art/DT
In DT, Year 3 will be making aprons. We will be exploring different aprons designs and how we can turn a 2D into 3D. The children will explore the different sewing techniques. Year 3 will then design, make and decorate our very own aprons.
