Year 3 Book Character

Assalamu’Alaikum Year 3

Welcome to Summer 2!

I hope you are rested and ready to do some amazing learning in the last term of Year 3. InSha’Allah we are ready to carry on being superb hard workers. Please do not hesitate to contact me or speak to me if you have any questions.

What we are learning this Year/Term

In English we will be reading ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry. During our lessons this term we are using a range of writing methods to develop and extend our understanding of the story. We will be writing poems, a balanced argument, writing the next part of the story and many more exciting lessons.

Guided Reading

In Year 3 we will be reading ‘Mr Stink’ by David Walliams. Through learning new vocabulary, making predictions about the story, retrieving information and summarising what they have read, we will be developing their understanding of the text being read.

It is important that your child also reads at home every day. Please ensure your child reads at least 15 minutes every day and listen to them read. We encourage children to read a wide range of books. Please let me know if your child does not have access to suitable reading material. Children are also able to join local libraries which are free.

We will be looking at and developing children’s understanding of angles, lines and shapes and perimeter. We will be using a variety of methods to help consolidate children’s learning and also use concrete materials to help with visualising the methods. Please ensure children continue practising their times tables at home to help consolidate their learning. They can use the timetables website which they have all been given logins to.

In computing children will be creating a digital book creator that builds a story of their choice and allows them to add images and voice overs.

In Science, Year 3 will be looking at parts of plants. In this unit children will have learned about the parts of flowering plants. Children will have identified and named the basic parts of flowering plants and recognised and described the functions of these parts, including the function of the flower in the plant life cycle. Children will have investigated the function of roots, stems, leaves and flowers and will have researched methods of seed dispersal. In addition, children will have learned about the process of pollination. They will also have investigated the way in which water is transported within plants and they will have constructed a terrarium to demonstrate how plants recycle water in a closed system.

Year 3 will be looking at how we can compare the Mediterranean to the UK. We will be exploring a variety of geographical skills such as locating countries and cities, reading the points of a compass and investigating the similarities and differences of physical and human geography between a region in the UK and a region in the mediterranean.

P.E. will be on Tuesdays. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit and suitable footwear.

This term Year 3 will be doing Plant art. We will be exploring botanical art and how artists can use nature to inspire the work. We will be building a range of skills such as appreciation, perspective, making tints and shades and many more exciting things.
