This term, the Reception class have been reading the book ‘Handa’s Surprise’ by Eileen Browne.
Handa puts seven delicious fruits in a basket to take to her friend, Akeyo. But as she walks, carrying the basket on her head, various creatures steal her fruits. When she shares her basket with Akeyo, it’s Handa who gets the biggest surprise.
The story is set in Kenya, and has given us opportunities to talk about different parts of the world, and what is different about each part of the world. For example, we have discussed the weather we may experience in Kenya, as opposed to that found in England.
The book offers a colourful and fun narrative for children to engage with closely, making predictions along the way about what may happen next.
The children have enjoyed writing about scenes from the story, for example
‘Handa is wearing a wonderful pink and green dress’.
‘Handa has six fruits in her basket for Akeyo’.
The children have loved spending time in the role play area, making their own masks and acting out scenes from the story.
