Year 3

Assalamu’Alaikum Year 3

Welcome to Spring 2

Welcome to Year 3! This year we are building on our skills, exploring new ideas and developing our independence as learners. From exciting stories and creative writing to challenging maths and fascinating science, Spring 2 will Insha'ALLAH be full of opportunities to grow, discover and achieve together. Please do not hesitate to contact me or speak to me if you have any questions.

What we are learning this term...

English

In English this term, we will be reading The King Who Banned the Dark. This imaginative and thought-provoking story will inspire a range of exciting writing opportunities across the term.

Throughout this term, the children will explore the text in depth through balanced arguments, poetry and newspaper articles. They will consider different viewpoints, debate key themes from the story and write thoughtfully about the impact of the King’s decisions. These activities will encourage them to think critically, develop empathy for characters and justify their opinions clearly.

Alongside this, we will continue to build our vocabulary, refine sentence structures and strengthen comprehension skills. As always, our focus will be on helping children grow in confidence and creativity, expressing their ideas clearly and effectively in a range of written forms.

Guided Reading

In Year 3 we will be reading ‘Varjak Paw' Through learning new vocabulary, making predictions about the story, retrieving information and summarising what they have read, we will be developing their understanding of the text being read.

It is essential that your child also reads for at least 10 minutes everyday. Your child has a reading record and a book that they take home. Please help your child with reading and filling our their reading record. We encourage children to read a wide range of books. Children are also given a book on the online library: Bug Club. Children can read a book online and improve their progress. Great readers make great learners.

Maths

In Maths this term, we will be focusing on length, mass and volume. Children will develop their understanding of how to measure and compare different quantities using standard units such as metres, centimetres, kilograms, grams, litres and millilitres.

Pupils will take part in practical and hands-on activities to deepen their understanding, including measuring objects, estimating and solving real-life word problems. They will learn to read scales accurately and apply their knowledge to a range of reasoning and problem-solving tasks.

Alongside this, we will continue to build fluency in calculation, develop mathematical vocabulary and strengthen confidence when explaining their thinking.

Computing

In computing children will be looking at the importance of online safety and how to stay safe online. They will also be learning how to use Google Docs effectively.

Science

In Science this term, our topic is Magnets and Forces. We will explore the question, “How do forces affect the way things move?” through practical, hands-on investigations.

Pupils will learn about different types of forces, including pushes and pulls, and explore how magnets attract and repel each other. They will investigate which materials are magnetic and discover that magnetic forces can act at a distance. We will also explore how friction affects movement and how surfaces can change the speed of an object.

Throughout the term, children will gather, record, classify and present data in a range of ways to help them answer scientific questions and further develop their enquiry and investigative skills.

History

In History, we are travelling back in time to explore Ancient Egypt. We will be investigating what life was like. We will be exploring their beliefs, architecture and  famous pharoahs.

PE

P.E. will be on Tuesdays. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E. kit and suitable footwear.

Art/DT

This term in Design and Technology, Year 3 will be exploring mechanisms. Children will investigate how different mechanisms work, including levers, linkages and simple moving parts.

Through practical, hands-on activities, pupils will design and create their own products that incorporate a working mechanism. They will learn how movement can be created and controlled, developing their understanding of how components fit together to make a finished product.

Throughout this term, children will follow the design process by planning, making and evaluating their work, building resilience, creativity and problem-solving skills.
