Year 2

 

English 

In Summer 1, Year 2 will be reading Ossiri and the Bala Mengro. Pupils will continue exploring rich storytelling while developing their understanding of different cultures and traditions. This engaging story will support children in building their reading skills and broaden their imagination.

Throughout the term, children will take part in purposeful reading, speaking and listening, drama, and writing activities that develop creativity, vocabulary, and confidence as independent authors.

We will also continue to focus on re-reading and editing for improvement, applying taught spelling patterns in independent writing, and increasing stamina for longer pieces of writing.

Phonics

This term, children will be working on Phase 5/ 5+ and learning about the rules of Spelling using a range of suffixes. We will also be learning new common exception words in Year 2. Please read with your child everyday for at least 5 minutes. Children are provided a book to take home every week and are required to access additional reading materials on Bugclub/ Oxford Owl. The more you practice with them, the better they will get and the easier learning will become for them!

Maths

This term, children will be developing their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with a closer look at Mass and temperature

Science

In Science this half term, Year 2 are learning about growing plants. The children will explore what plants need to grow and stay healthy, including water, light, and suitable temperatures.

Through hands-on activities and observations, they will investigate how seeds and bulbs develop into mature plants, and begin to understand the life cycle of a plant. Pupils will also learn how to care for plants and recognise the importance of plants in our environment.

Geography

Year 2 will be learning about different places around the world and identifying which locations have hot climates and which have cold climates. Children will be comparing physical features, weather patterns and what life is like in contrasting environments.

We will be using maps, atlases, globes and digital images to explore where hot and cold places are found, and we will begin to understand why some animals live in certain parts of the world.

DT

In DT, Year 2 are exploring sculptures. The children are experimenting with different materials and techniques to design and create their own 3D structures. They are learning how to shape, join, and build using a range of materials, while developing their creativity and problem-solving skills.

Through hands-on activities, pupils are also learning how to plan, make, and evaluate their sculptures, thinking carefully about how to improve their designs.

Computing

 In Computing, we will be learning about Online Safety, exploring how to stay safe and responsible when using technology. Children will also do activites such as making beats to create their own music digitally, experimenting with sounds and rhythms. In addition, Year 2 will use Scratch Jr to design and program simple interactive projects, learning how to add characters, movement, and events to their stories.

Islamic Studies and Arabic

Year 2 will be taught Islamic Studies by Ustadh Kasujja three times a week. The children will learn about the importance of different Islamic values, how best to apply these in everyday life, Muslim identity in addition to learning and practicing new Surahs.

PE

PE is on Thursday with the PE Coach. Please ensure that your child remembers their correct PE kit every Thursday.

HOMEWORK

Homework will be set every Friday and collected on Tuesday. Homework will consist of Maths, English and Spellings. Children will also be expected to complete homework on platforms such as Google Classroom, IXL, Purple Mash and Bug Club. Your child will be sent home with a reading book every week. Please encourage children to read the book more than once to help familiariase themeselves with the vocabulary used and secure their phonetical knowledge, reading and comprehension.
