Welcome to Year 6.
In shaa Allah, you have had a restful break and are ready for the year ahead. This year is an important milestone as you complete your primary education. The year ahead will be busy and will require you to work hard but also we will have lots of fun in shaa Allah. To reach your goal you will need resilience, focus and patience.
I have set out the learning for this term, below. If there are any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Please ensure children bring a water bottle to school everyday!
In Autumn 1 we will be focusing on place value up to 10 milllion. This is an important skill and underpins the work we do in year 6. Children need to be able to read and write numbers up to 10million. We will then learn how to add and subtract by exploring the four operations starting with creating and solving expressions involving brackets, indices, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. Pupils are then multiplying 3- and 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers using number bonds and column multiplication as the key methods. Pupils learn how to divide 3- and 4-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers using a variety of methods, including number bonds and long division. We will then begin solving more complex word problems involving multiple operations, including multiplication and division, with bar models being a main heuristic in addition to other pictorial methods.
This term, we will read Way Home. We will start by writing and performing poetry which incorporates what the boy may hear, see, smell and feel. The children will also create soundscapes. The children will write a prequel to the story using their narrative writing skills. The unit ends with a non-chronological report about homelessness. The children will learn to use a range of punctuation including colons and semi – colons. They will also learn how to use a range of literary devices such as fronted adverbials and relative clauses. The children will use headings, sub-headings and bullet points. The children need to be able to spell Year 6 vocabulary and use neat handwriting.
The Boy in the Tower is about a young boy who faces many dilemmas. Ade, who lives with his mother, watches as the buildings fall around him. The Bluchers – a strange and terrible kind of plant – are taking over the city, and everyone is being forced to evacuate, but his mother is refusing to leave her room. And so Ade watches alone as the city slowly empties, and the Bluchers creep ever closer…
During guided reading sessions, children learn a wide range of new vocabulary which they will use to understand the text as well as use in their own writing. They will learn how to use more complex inferencing and retrieval skills to answer questions about the book.
Light and Sight
In this unit children will learn about how light travels and that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes, or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes. They will learn that shiny or reflective surfaces alter the direction in which light travels. Children will have the opportunity to solve problems related to everyday life about how light travels and how we see. Children will also investigate and explain the shapes of shadows, and relate this to light travelling in straight lines.
Working Scientifically, children will have the opportunity to plan and carry out an investigation in the context of finding a reflective material for children’s clothing. They will have the opportunity to use light sensors and data logging equipment to measure and record their observations and they will write a report detailing what they have concluded.
During our computing lessons there will be a strong emphasis on online safety. Children will learn how to use the internet safely by following the SMART Rule. They will learn about how to be safe on social media, blogs and online gaming,
The children will also be taught about screen time and will participate in some home learning which will enable them to see how much time they spend on electronic devices.
Although we will move on to other topics during the year, online safety will remain a prioirty.
Year 6 have P.E on Thursdays. Please ensure that children come to school in their P.E kit and bring water bottles.
Design and Technology
